Fun Activities to Enjoy in Black Hawk

There are tons of fun activities to do in Black Hawk on your next visit or weekend getaway. You can do more than just game. Take a hike or explore a museum.

While Black Hawk is the gaming capital of Colorado, boasting an impressive number of casinos with more than 200,000 square feet of room for you to try your luck, you’ll also find plenty of other fun activities when you’re ready for a break from the action. Here are some suggestions to include in your itinerary to this exciting city.

Hiking and Biking

Enjoy the outdoors and experience some amazing views of the mountains or other scenery by either taking a walk or bike ride along one of the trails. Black Hawk Peak provides a short four-mile trek through an old mining town where you can stop and explore. Another option for hikers is the James Peak Lake Trail. While it’s a short hike, it is over 11,000 feet above sea level, so be prepared for a little exertion. The effort is worth it as you plan an afternoon to relax with a picnic or fishing pole. Warren Gulch offers bikers a slightly challenging but mostly smooth trail.

Camping

For those who want to experience even more of the outdoors, there are plenty of options for camping in Black Hawk. Plan a stay at the Golden Gate State Park at Reverend’s Edge Campground where you can enjoy toilets, showers and even laundry facilities. Choose an electrical hookup site for your RV or a non-electrical site for old-fashioned tent camping.
Spend a night or more at the Kelly Dahl Campground, located in the Roosevelt National Forest for spectacular views. You’ll enjoy a fabulous place to relax with picnic tables and grills as well as fire rings for dinner. Kids can play at the playground as you unwind from a day of activity.

Scenic Drives

If you want to enjoy the great Colorado outdoors in another way, you can choose from among several scenic drives. One of the best is the Peak-to-Peak Highway with a 63-mile trip. The journey starts in Central City with the final destination in Estes Park, providing gorgeous views along the way. As the oldest scenic byway in Colorado, it’s a trip you won’t want to miss. Lariat Loop is a unique byway in that it focuses on the foothills, allowing you to explore museums and other interesting sites along the way.

Indoor Fun

You’ll also find plenty of indoor activities to keep you occupied with places like the Denver Museum of Nature & Science or one of the many art museums around the area. The History Colorado Center will take you back in time as you learn about mining for gold, early settlers and other historical facts through exhibitions and stories.

Winter Fun

When you think of Colorado, you often think of skiing. You’ll find plenty of options surrounding Black Hawk where you can spend time on the slopes. Perhaps the most famous is the Loveland Ski Area which boasts 1800 acres of beautiful terrain for every level of skier. Eldora is the closest resort to Black Hawk and is a favorite with the locals.
